How to Fold a Sturdier Paper Hand Fan Without Glue with an A4 paper

England has been experiencing another heatwave, and after already having one in June, I found myself looking for ways to stay cool during the warmer days.

It reminded me of the simple paper hand fans I used to make as a child growing up in Malaysia. We folded them all the time, and I must have made countless versions over the years.

As many of you know, I enjoy finding paper-folding solutions without relying on glue whenever possible. Traditional folded paper fans are quick and easy to make, but they can sometimes feel a little flimsy after repeated use. I wondered if there was a way to make one sturdier while still keeping it completely glue-free.

After a bit of experimenting, I came up with a version that includes a few extra folds. These create double layers along the edges, making the fan feel stronger and more durable. As a bonus, it also seems to move a little more air when fanning.

I’ve put together a tutorial showing exactly how I make it. In the video, I also share a simple method for dividing the paper evenly and accurately, which helps achieve neat, consistent folds.

If England’s warm weather continues, I think I’ll make a few more to bring along to our next coffee meet-up with the yogis. It would be fun for everyone to have one, and a handmade fan feels like the perfect companion for a summer gathering.

If you’d like to make your own, you can find the full tutorial below. I hope it helps you stay cool this summer.
