We are welcoming the Year of the Tiger on February 1st, 2022. One of the traditions during Chinese New Year is giving a red envelope containing money as a gift to children and young adults.
In Malaysia and most East Asia countries, you can get packs of empty red envelopes for free, from financial institutions, businesses, etc. But here in the UK, especially where I live, I can only buy them online, and they usually come in packs of 24 or more. That’s one of the reasons why I like to create my own red envelope, I really only need a few and I think the handmade red envelope makes it special for the person you are giving it to.
Below is the origami tiger red envelope I created. You need 15cm square of red paper for the envelope, a 7.5cm square of orange or yellow paper for the tiger, and a black pen to draw the face. I’ve included the diagram and a video tutorial on my YouTube channel.
Please tag me @gohlikim on Instagram if you decide to make one. I would love to see your creation. Happy folding and Happy Chinese new year, 新年快乐!
